2018-19 Welcome Message

August 1, 2018

Dear Emerson Families:

On behalf of the Emerson staff, I’d like to welcome both new and returning families to the 2018-2019 school year! This will be my 19th year at the middle school level, and my second year as Emerson principal. I am continually impressed with how capable and compassionate junior high students are given equitable support and opportunities.

In this academic year, our site goals will align with the district-wide focus on 21st Century Teaching and Learning, Closing the Achievement Gap, and a Safe, Inclusive Campus. We are excited to also incorporate the new DJUSD Graduate Profile into our teaching and learning. Throughout the summer, many Emerson staff have been engaged in professional development around AVID strategies, Equity, Project-Based Learning, and Google Certification training. We are excited to bring these innovations to our school and make this upcoming year an exceptional experience for all students and families.

We are welcoming a few new staff members to our team this school year:

  • Tovah Skiles (Spanish)

  • Sandy Schuster (Special Education)

  • Shawna Perlman (School Nurse)

  • Macara Nicoll (9th Grade Counselor)

The Emerson community has always thrived due to support from our parents and guardians. Our Site Council, English Language Action Committee, our Emerson PTA, music and sports boosters, along with volunteering for school activities, are some of the many ways to get involved this year and make some valuable connections with other Emerson families.

In this mailing, please find information about schedule pick-up times and dates, our WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) orientation program for incoming 7th graders, along with information from our Emerson PTA. All of this is also available on our website at http://emerson.djusd.net.  I look forward to meeting all of you in August and throughout the first few weeks of school!

Sincerely,

Scott J. Thomsen, Principal
