During construction bicyclists and pedestrians, traveling east and west who used the Davis Little League Path will need to change their route

Route Changes Include:

  • When leaving Davis High School or North Davis Elementary and traveling eastbound:

Follow the detour signs through Community Park to the intersection of F Street and 14th Street.  At F Street and 14th Street, enter into the bike lane and ride until you reach F Street and 11th Street.  At F Street and 11th Street, a crossing guard will assist you with crossing F Street.  Then travel to H Street and follow the detour signs to the H Street tunnel.

  • When traveling from Holmes Jr. High and traveling westbound:

Go through the H Street tunnel.  Follow the detour signs on H Street headed south towards 11th Street.  At 11th Street, continue to F Street where the crossing guard will assist you across the street.  Then travel to B Street.  At B Street turn north towards 14th Street.  There is a crossing guard at B and 14th.

  • Do not cut-through the apartment parking lots between F Street and H Street.
  • Do not ride your bike the wrong way on the road.

A map of the detour can be found here.

More information on the project can be found here.

From November 29-early January, there will be construction affecting the H to F street pathway, on the south side of the little league fields.  During construction, students, pedestrians, and cyclists traveling between H street and F street can use 11th street to safely cross F. A temporary crosswalk with a crossing guard will be located at 11th Street.  Find below links to more information.  We want to make sure that students are taking the safest routes possible to school.

On Monday, December 4th, 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm in the Emerson Gym, we are excited to be able to offer Nightmare on Puberty St. – a professionally produced live theatre program presented free of charge to our 7th and 8th grade students as a community benefit of Kaiser Permanente. Comedy, music, dance, and emotional drama take students on a tongue-in-cheek journey along the rocky road to adulthood.

It gives students an opportunity to talk about crucial health issues they may have found difficult to discuss, including:

peer pressure and self-esteem

first feelings of sexual attraction

depression and thoughts of suicide

coping with violent environments

talking with parents and peers

decision-making skills to resist negative peer pressure

the uses of positive peer pressure and how to be a good friend

the impact of labels and name-calling

how to seek health information and help from adults

If you do not want your student to participate in this opportunity, please send an email opting your student out of this activity to John Campbell, Vice Principal at jcampbell@djusd.net.

If you are interested in learning more or downloading A Parent’s Guide: Nightmare on Puberty St. from the Kaiser website, please go to the following URL:  http://etnortherncalifornia.kaiserpermanente.org/nightmare-on-puberty-st-parents-and-educators/

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Today, October 11, experts have determined the air quality in Davis is unhealthy for all groups. The smoke from wildfires in our region continues to impact our city and county.

School remains in session but we continue to monitor the situation and the communications from the Yolo Solano Air Quality Management District and the County of Yolo.  Safety remains a top priority for our school community.  Individuals are encouraged to stay indoors with windows closed.   Students arriving at school this morning will be directed inside to multipurpose rooms or classrooms.  Students will remain indoors during recess, lunch and PE.  Athletic activities are being reviewed and updates will be available on the District and Davis website and Facebook throughout the day.

If you have a student with health concerns, please contact your school office.

Further questions about smoke conditions can be sent to Maria Clayton,  DJUSD Public Information Officer at mclayton@djusd.net.

Students are now checking out textbooks from the Emerson & Da Vinci Library. Textbooks, English novels, and library books are a valuable resource for our students and we like to keep them in the best possible condition for continued use. Library staff are reminding students about book responsibilities and all students are given a copy of the following guidelines:

  • You are 100% responsible for any damage or loss to books checked out to you. This includes textbooks, English novels, and regular library books.

  • Cover your textbooks with paper or a store-bought stretchy cover to protect them from damage. Do not put tape or glue directly on the book!

  • You must report damage to a book within the first week of it being checked out to you, as you will be 100% responsible for the condition of the book after that.

  • Write your name in pen on the space provided inside the cover of your textbooks, as you are financially responsible if you lose your book.

  • Immediately report any issues with your books to the library!

The library will be providing paper and supplies for covering textbooks during lunch time once the library is finished with all textbook checkouts. Thank you very much, if you have any questions about library policies you may contact Lesli McCutcheon at lmccutcheon@djusd.net

Davis Joint Unified School District, in partnership with the Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency, announces that the Valley Oak Preschools (including Headstart), and the Adult Living Skills Program will be closed for one day on Friday, May 26, 2017, due to the outbreak of Norovirus.

Norovirus can cause stomach pain, fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, and more than 3,000 students have been ill for the last three weeks in Yolo County. Our school has worked hard to prevent Norovirus from spreading; however, our school continues to see an increase in sick students at a higher percentage than most schools in the county.  The decision to close our specific school site for this one date was made because of the percentage of students and staff in our programs that have reported symptoms over the last three weeks.

To prevent spread of the virus and to perform further deep cleaning/disinfection of our site, the school will be closed on Friday, May 26, 2017 and will reopen on Tuesday, May 30.  We apologize for the short notice and understand how this can affect families, but we need to take a more aggressive approach to end the outbreak.

This year we will be using a finals schedule that allows students blocked time to take their final exams in all of their classes. The purpose of this schedule is to allow 9th grade classes to have a more definitive high school experience, and to allow teachers to give a comprehensive final or project with a quality time frame. The shortened day also allows teachers time to assess final tests and projects while concluding curriculum for the year. The finals schedule will be used at all four junior high campuses to allow students to put their best effort forward towards their final exams. Below you will see the schedule that will be followed the week of May 31st through June 2nd. Please be aware that the school day will end at 12:50 with students going home afterward. There will be a bag lunch available at this time for students who would like to get lunch. Please contact the Emerson office at 530-757-5430 if you have any questions.

The following update is for all DJUSD employees and DJUSD parents/guardians.

                                                NOROVIRUS UPDATE

May 19, 2017

The following is updated information about the recent outbreak of the Norovirus in our region and school district.

What is the Norovirus?

According to County Health officials, Norovirus is a highly contagious gastrointestinal virus. Symptoms may include stomach cramps, fever, nauseau, vomiting and diarrhea. The virus is passed through touching surfaces contaminated with the virus, close contact with an infected person or eating contaminated food or drink.  County Health experts report that the spread of virus is continuing and encourage the public to take extra precautions to curb the spread. Visit Yolo County Norovirus website and Press Releases.

What should I do to protect myself and others from the virus?

There are three key actions you can take to help prevent the spread of Norovirus:

  1. Report absences related to stomach illness symptoms to your school office.
  2. Encourage the practice of regular hand washing, especially before meals.
  3. Stay home an additional 48 hours after symptoms resolve. (Health experts warn that individuals are still highly contagious in this timeframe.)

Has the Norovirus affected Davis schools?

Norovirus cases have been confirmed in our schools. Over the last two weeks, the numbers of new cases do not appear to be growing rapidly.  We continue to see reported absences across the district, but the attendance rates are generally remaining steady.  That said, because this virus outbreak is highly contagious and the County Health experts have told us the spread has not peaked, we anticipate we will continue to see Norovirus absences throughout the end of the school year.  Certain school campuses have reported more staff or student cases than others, but, at this time, the virus is not disrupting normal school operations at any campus.

What is DJUSD doing to protect schools and students?

DJUSD is taking a three-pronged approach to addressing the current health situation:

  1. Daily Monitoring of Possible Cases and Regional Coordination

Over the last two weeks, our schools have have been tracking absences of students and employees with symptoms that may be caused by the Norovirus. Lead district adminstrators have been monitoring the numbers and trends as well as particpating in regular teleconferences led by Yolo County officials to talk about regional trends, cleaning recommendations, health updates and recommendations.

  1. Disinfecting and Deep Cleaning Efforts across Campuses and in Targeted Areas

Ensuring that we keep students and school learning environments safe and clean is a top priority.  DJUSD is diligently deploying extra resources to combat the spread of the Norovirus in our schools with the use of proper disinfecting agents. By tracking new cases on a daily basis and coordinating with county and federal entities about proper chemical use, we are able to target additional resources appropriately and effectively.  Custodians are working throughout the day to respond to calls as well as to cleanse and disinfect high contact point surfaces (doorknobs, restrooms, water fountains, keypads, etc.)  Additionally, our maintenance team is deploying crews to schools for evening and weekend deep cleaning.

  1. Education and Communication to Employees and the School Community

Keeping the community up to date on the current situation is a priority. DJUSD has issued a series of updates for employees and school site leaders. In addition to this communication, an update went out to all DJUSD parents/guardians early last week.   Updates, press releases and information from County Health continue to be shared on the DJUSD website, School Loop News and on the Davis Joint Unified School District Facebook Page. The school district continues to respond to inquiries from local news media almost daily.  If you have specific questions about the  Norovirus and what is happening in our school district, please contact your school principal or our Public Information Officer, Maria Clayton at mclayton@djusd.net.

The following Student Health and Safety information about the spread of Norovirus  is provided to Parents and Guardians from the Davis Joint Unified School District:

Yolo County Gastrointestinal (GI) Outbreak
According to the Yolo County Health Department hundreds of students, teachers, and school staff are sick with stomach cramps, vomiting, and/or diarrhea in schools throughout Yolo County and the number is increasing each day. In Davis schools we have limited cases, but are seeing more students and staff having to stay home with symptoms each day.

Facts from County Health experts:

  • The outbreak is most likely caused by the Norovirus which is highly contagious.
  • Norovirus commonly spreads through touching surfaces contaminated with the virus, close contact with someone who is infected, or eating contaminated food or drink.
  • Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain.
  • Symptoms last for 1-3 days.  However, after symptoms go away, people are still highly infectious, especially the first 48 hours.  There is no treatment for Norovirus.

More information about Norovirus, please visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/Norovirus  Information about Norovirus and templates for letters and guidance is also available by clicking on “Communicable Disease Investigation and Control” on the Yolo County website.

The Yolo County Public Health Officer states the following actions be taken to prevent further spread of the infection:

  •  Students, Teachers, and School Staff should stay home if there is any sign of illness such as stomach pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea.
  • Stay home for an additional 48 hours after symptoms are gone.  Even though you feel better, you still carry the virus and can infect other people.
  • Wash your hands frequently throughout the day with soap and water.
  • Clean contaminated surfaces regularly with appropriate disinfectant.
  •  Do not prepare food and drink for others if you are sick.
  • Report to school front office if your student has fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or stomach pain.
  • Questions related to symptoms and treatment should be directed to your primary care provider or clinic.

Take Notice- Health Update

A new stomach virus has been on the rise in our county and currently affecting UC Davis and Woodland schools as well as schools in Sacramento.   At this time it is not affecting Davis school operations, but cases have been identified across our district.  As the situation changes, DJUSD will keep our community posted.
-----------
The Yolo County Health & Human Services Agency is investigating a gastrointestinal illness (GI) outbreak throughout the county. The most common cause of widespread GI illness is Norovirus, more commonly called the stomach flu. The organism causing the present outbreak is unknown at this time but Public Health is working to identify the organism.  Please read the press release for information about the situation.

Each spring, seventh and eighth grade students in California participate in the statewide testing program, which is the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System. The tests in the CAASPP System provide information to teachers, parents/guardians, and students about students’ progress and readiness for college and career. In eighth grade students are also tested in science. Emerson seventh and eighth grade students will take the SBAC during the week of April 24.

During this week, your child will probably be a little tired by the end of the day!  The best way to support this process is to ensure that:

  • Every child eats a healthy breakfast and a healthy lunch
  • Avoid any school interruptions (such as doctor appointments) during the instructional day, if possible.
  • Encourage healthy sleep patterns and exercise
  • Students will take teh ELA and math computer adaptive test on Monday and Tuesday, and will take the ELA and math performance tasks on Thursday and Friday. There will be NO testing on Wednesday.

If you have any questions regarding your child’s participation, please contact Emerson Junior High at 530-757-5430 or email at sdesideri@djusd.net

This year is the 50th Anniversary of Davis’ Holmes Junior High School! Holmes was founded in 1966, and has been one of Davis’ Junior High schools, teaching thousands of children and contributing to our community. Its mascot is the Patriot. The namesake of the school is Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., a well-known American poet and author.

To celebrate, Holmes is holding our 50th Anniversary Open House on April 27th, 2017. We are also collecting artifacts to be placed in a time capsule that will be buried in the grounds of Holmes. If you have any items that you feel could be put in it, bring them to the front office of Holmes. We are also creating a Display Case in the library. The theme of this is “50 years of faces”. Feel free to bring anything that you feel will represent this subject, prior to the event. The deadline for these items is April 21st.

The Open House Celebration begins at 6:00pm, and ends at 8pm. It will be at Holmes. The address is 1220 Drexel Drive, Davis CA. All families are welcome! We would especially like to invite any Holmes alumni from years past or former Holmes students currently attending district schools. Wear any Holmes memorabilia that you own and come ready to have a good time! There will be food vendors, music performances, and activities around campus, so bring your family and get food and sit in the grass to watch students perform. We hope to see you soon!

We All Belong: Safe and Welcoming Schools for All

Davis Schools Community Forum

Brunelle Theatre, Davis Senior High School

Monday, January 23, 6:30-8:00 pm

Over the last month, the Davis Joint Unified School District has communicated with parents, staff and the community our commitment to ensuring that school remains a safe place for all students and families, regardless of their immigration status, race, color, ancestry, national origin, ethnic group identification, age, religion, marital or parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or gender expression.  In order to reaffirm our values, DJUSD is crafting a resolution for adoption at the Board of Education meeting scheduled for February 2.  In addition to the variety of ways we have been gathering input (community events, visiting school sites, and learning from your phone calls and emails as part of our usual process to maintain a positive school climate) we would like to invite you to attend a DJUSD-led community forum about safe schools to share your experience and perspectives.  To read recent communications from our Superintendent on this topic,  visit www.djusd.net and click on Superintendent Communication.

Spanish interpretation will be available at the event.
